Unit Three: Copy Editing

In this third unit, we will focus on paragraph- and line-level edits, with some time also spent toward fact-checking. You will complete a series of copy editing exercises both in and out of class, ultimately copy editing a series of brief texts. In your groups, you will compare drafts, discuss deviations, and go back to create a collated/annotated version; individually, you will annotate your versions (with CMS references and explanatory-to-the-project-editor queries). You will submit your sample edits along with a short reflection paper. In the end, you will review your Unit 3 portfolio in a one-on-one meeting with your professor (to take place between Wednesday, 4/12 and Friday, 4/14).

For quick reference, that portfolio will contain:

  1. a short take-home/open-note copy edit test

  2. group edited piece

  3. 2 individually edited pieces
*You’ll insert your notes into single Google documents with a co-copy editor.

  4. short reflection paper
(800-1500 words; on the function and meaning of copy editing)

Here is the quick reference CMS sheet; I’ll watch for these items in your edits, rather than the entirety of the CMS.

Please share your files in a single folder, either on Google Drive or Collab,
as you prefer based on the platform you used for editing.
