Unit 3:
Larger Coverage
(Features & Broader Readerships)
In this unit, we’ll consider the joys and challenges of writing more in-depth news stories, often with broader readerships in mind (i.e., state/national/international circulations). Students will explore the distinctions and overlaps between local/regional and state/national/international news items, as well as strategies for dealing with blended readerships.
The week’s major assignment will be handed out during Tuesday’s class time. You will have time to work in news writing/editing teams during Tuesday-Thursday classes, with final submission deadlines of 11:59 p.m. on Thursday night.
By the end of Unit 3, students should be able to:
Speak thoughtfully about the values and challenges of larger news writing projects (analytical reporting, investigative pieces, editorial, etc.).
Draft a modest article on a state or national (not international or multiple-states) issue; may be a subject-specific piece (for example, on a science research item).
