Unit Four
What We Leave Behind

Unit Overview:

Having now studied a wide range of texts across UVA’s 200-year history, you’ve likely identified trends or examples that you find worthwhile, and others you see as missed opportunities. In this unit, we consider—what do WE want to contribute to the history and culture of writing at UVA? What do WE want to create and leave behind for those who follow us?

We will be creating original texts with wide latitude. Some of you may choose to write traditional essays or journals, poems or short stories; others may create multimodal pieces. You may write something you dream up independently, or you may put together something more journalistic, bringing in other student voices. Whatever you create, we’ll be donating the final archive to UVA’s Special Collections, for future generations to find when they search the catalog for “student writing” in the university archives.

By the unit’s end, you should be able to:

  • Have fun with a piece of writing of your choice!

  • Generate and execute a project you believe has value for future readers.

  • Recognize and present your own work as an exhibit piece for historic preservation.
